Web server hardening for South Florida businesses
If your site runs on a Linux server or VPS with nginx or Apache, strangers are already rattling the handles. Hardening is the plain, boring work of locking every door except the one your customers use, and we do it without taking your site down.

A stock server is an open house
A fresh VPS ships with factory settings. Root can log in with a password. Ports sit open just in case. The PHP version is whatever was lying around when the image was built.
None of that is an accident. It is convenience, and convenience is exactly what scanners hunt for. They do not know your name or care what you sell. Automated bots try common passwords against servers all day, and an unlocked VPS is just another handle to rattle.
The fix is nothing exotic. It is a short list of chores done right and written down. No single step makes a server untouchable. Together they make yours a lousy target.
What we harden
Every server is different, so the exact scope comes from the inventory. The core lockdown covers the same ground most of the time.
No advanced degrees required. Boring is the point, because boring holds up.
- SSH keys only, with root password logins shut off.
- A firewall that opens only the ports your site actually needs.
- Automatic security updates, plus current PHP and TLS settings.
- Security headers and rate limiting, so junk traffic hits a wall before your site feels it.
- Least-privilege file ownership and log rotation that keeps working even when the disk fills.
- Off-server backups, with a CDN or proxy in front so the origin server stays hidden.
How we work without taking your site down
Downtime is the real fear, and it should be. So the work happens in stages, and every change can be rolled back.
Where it makes sense, we build and test on a copy first, then ship to live during a quiet hour. Careful beats clever.
- Inventory first. We map what is installed, what is exposed and what talks to what.
- Changes run on a schedule you approve, in a window that suits your business.
- We test after each step. Anything that misbehaves gets reversed, not explained away.
- Every change lands in a written record your IT person can read and challenge.
It fits the stack you already have
WordPress, WooCommerce, custom sites built by anyone, fresh builds and ancient ones. Anything on Linux with nginx or Apache is fair game.
Running parts of the business on Shopify or another hosted platform? That storefront lives on their servers, behind their locks. Any VPS you run beside it, a blog or an old internal app, is still your door to close.
Bring your IT person, or borrow ours
Some owners forward this page to their tech person. Good. The written record is made for them: what changed, when, why and how to undo it. No black boxes, no mystery settings.
No tech person on staff? Also common. When a client needs it, we host sites on our own managed servers, and we set up uptime monitoring with alerts, so you hear about trouble fast instead of from a customer.

Questions
Will hardening knock my site offline?
That is what the whole method is built to avoid. We stage changes on a schedule you approve, test after each step, and work from a copy before anything touches live. No crossed fingers.
My host says the server is managed. Am I covered?
Ask them what managed actually covers. On some plans it stops at the hardware and the network, and your SSH settings, file permissions and PHP version stay on you. Five minutes of questions now beats finding out the hard way.
How will I know what changed?
You get a written record of every change: what it was, when it happened, why it was needed and how to reverse it. Hand it to any IT person and they can pick up exactly where we left off.
Can you keep watching the server afterward?
Yes. If you need it, we host sites on our own managed servers and set up uptime monitoring with alerts. Call 844-310-9720 and tell us what you are running.
Is this a one-time job?
The lockdown itself is one project. Staying hardened is a habit: automatic security updates, log rotation, off-server backups and a review on a sensible schedule. We can run that for you or hand your team the checklist.
